Miriam
Gauci was born in Malta on the 3rd April 1958 and
has since become the most successful Maltese
soprano, enjoying an international career and
reputation. She started her studies with her aunt,
soprano Hilda Mallia Tabone, who early recognized
her talent. She continued her studies at Milan's
Conservatorio Verdi where she obtained her Diploma
di Canto and at the Centro Perfezionamento Artisti
Lirici del Teatro Alla Scala di Milano, where she
was awarded a special diploma.
After winning several prestigious vocal
competitions, she made her professional debut in
1984 in Bologna (Poulenc's La voix humaine)
and has since enjoyed an international career. She
has performed at, among others, La Scala, the State
Operas of Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Dresden, Vienna,
the Paris Opera-Bastille, Teatre del Liceu in
Barcelona, as well as in Florence, Naples, Toulouse,
Madrid, Geneva and Zurich. In North America, she has
been applauded at Santa Fe Opera (1987 U.S. debut
with Madama Butterfly), with Los Angeles
Opera during its 1986-87 inaugural season (Mimì in
La bohème opposite Plácido Domingo), and with
San Francisco Opera (Mimi in Bohème during
the 1999-2000 Season). Gauci has also been acclaimed
as Liù (Turandot), Elisabetta (Don Carlo),
Desdemona (Otello), Margherita/Elena (Mefistofele),
Amelia Grimaldi (Simon Boccanegra), as well
as in the title roles of Suor Angelica and Manon
Lescaut. Highlights of her most recent
engagements include Bohème for her
Metropolitan Opera debut; Mefistofele,
Butterfly and Don Carlo in Vienna;
Simon Boccanegra in Munich and Zurich; in
addition to Le nozze di Figaro (Countess
Almaviva) in Bilbao. Included in her discography are
nine complete operas, a solo disc of Italian arias,
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Verdi's Requiem, as well
as Dvorák's Stabat Mater and Te Deum.
Miriam Gauci's alternately powerful and gentle voice
can stir the emotions just as well as many more
famous opera singers. She has sung opposite
celebrities like tenors Placido Domingo, Giacomo
Aragall, Peter Dvorsky, and Francisco Araiza and
collaborated with conductors such as Gavazzeni,
Varvisi, Mehta, Pretre, Muti, Abbado and Sawallisch.
In 1993, she was conferred with the membership of
Malta's National Order of Merit by President Vincent
Tabone. She is married to conductor / pianist
Michael Laus and they have a daughter. |
