The
Maltese Language School of NSW has been running the language
schools for the last eleven years. This scholastic year they
have over 70 students enrolled in their three campuses at
Horsley Park, Seven Hills and at Schofields in NSW.
Their long term policy is to entice students, while still in
their respective schools to learn Maltese. To this end, they
have been successful in attracting students from Terra Sancta
College at Schofields to participate in the teaching of the
Maltese Language as an extra subject after their schools hours.
The breakthrough came after music teacher, Michelle Leniham
attended Maltese language classes at Horsley Park and was so
impressed that decided to extend her newfound knowledge about
her culture, history and heritage to other young students of
Maltese descent attending the College where she teaches.
Working with Maria DeCarlo, the Maltese Language School of NSW
co-ordinator, they turned a lunchtime activity of over 30
students into a special project for classes after school hours
for High School students from year 7 to year 10.
The class commenced in February 2009 made up mostly of
Australian born students of Maltese descent. The attendance in
Term One was very good and a great interest is shown by the
students to learn the language, history and culture of Malta.
On Easter week, a food fest including the Maltese figolli was
organised. Other teachers from Terra Sancta College were there
to observe the class in progress. The class teacher is Maria De
Carlo, and assistant Mary Muscat.
The Maltese Language School is a sub-division of the Maltese
Community Council of NSW. A spokesperson for the Council said
that this breakthrough is aimed at the long-term survival of the
Maltese Language and the strategy to execute activities that
maintain target numbers for candidates for the Higher School
Certificate. |

CCAFL National Reference Group had identified Maltese
Continuers as a course that is at risk of
suspension due to the low number of students in 2007.
