IL-ĦANUT TA' DWINU

written by Manuel Casha
Produced by the Maltese Performing Arts Association

Il-Ħanut ta' Dwinu (the shop of Dwinu) is the first and only għana play written and produced in Australia. It was performed in front of a large audience at Lithuanian Theatre in Melbourne by the Maltese Performing Arts Association on the 1st November 1992. The music created for it was purely modernised ghana arrangements and also included some very old traditional verses like parts from "L-Għarusa tal-Mosta".

In this play Manuel Casha tried to recreate the old wine shop where the għannejja gather. There you will find three guitars hanging on the wall, because guitars attract guitarists and guitarists attract għannejja and għannejja attract business.

The play goes through a day in the life of the wine shop. The shopkeeper is Dwinu Caminzuli, played by Edwin Baldacchino, who inherited the shop from his father who had opened the shop before the war. The characters are farmers, għannejja, street sellers, women who come to chase their men home and generally Maltese life pre-war.
