Leli
Sultana "il-Moni" sang
għana
for over sixty years. In his long career he
has sang with most of the legendary
għannejja of the 20th century and took
part in many għana events that left a
mark on the story of Maltese folklore.
During this time he has won many trophies,
certificates and awards, including the
MANOEL DE VILHENA AWARD which was given to
him for his contribution to għana in
Australia. This was a great honour which is
usually won by barristers, doctors and
business people.
Leli Sultana was born in Marsa on the 16th
of August 1921. His family owned a shop in
Barbary Street, Marsa, which was frequented
by għannejja, daqqaqa and
dilettantes of għana. In this
atmosphere he started taking part in
għana and was soon singing with many
famous għannejja of time like Pawlu Seychell
"l-Għannej", Salvu Darmanin "Ir-ruġel",
Ġuzeppi Xuereb "Ix-Xhudi" and many
other top għannejja of the time.
In 1934, when Leli was just 14 years old, he
sang for the first time at Buskett,
l-Imnarja with Pawlu Seychell. He could
still remember many of the stanzas he sang.
One of his favourites was "Ma xatt
il-baħar" which won him a trophy at
Buskett in 1945. During these years Leli
Sultana won many trophies but the one he
remembered the best was the one he won when
he sang against "Ix-Xudi" in 1954.
Leli Sultana was one of the first
għannejja who immigrated to Australia
and during that time took part in the
development of Maltese għana in that
country and since at the time there was
nowhere where għannejja and
daqqaqa could meet he used to invite
them to his house where it became like an
għana club.
Leli Sultana "il-Moni" died on the 27th
September 2003 in Melbourne, Australia. |
