Grezzju Ellul "ta' Ċanċa"
1926 - 1996

written by
John J. Cassar

Grezzju Ellul "ta' Ċanċa" was born on the 16th of October 1926 in Żejtun. He played lead guitar (prim) and accompaniment (sekond) and was one of the most sought after guitarists in Malta. He was also an excellent singer of għana fil-gholi.

Grezzju was helped and encouraged by one of Malta’s best (prim) guitarists, Indri Brincat "il-Pupa" which he always referred to, as the master. He would spend hours playing and studying Indri's tape recordings of prejjem and sometimes would murmur some praise on the way Indri played.

He was married on the 28th of August 1949 to Marianna Mercieca. They had six children, Nena, Johnny, Ġuzi, Frans, Lela and Maria. Maria, the youngest married to Charlie Abela, the son of Fredu Abela "iż-Żejtuni" and also my nephew.

Grezju worked at the Public works until he retired in 1978.

Grezzju Ellul was taken ill while playing the guitar at a serata in Żejtun where he was immediately rushed to hospital. He died on the 19th of January 1996.
