Carmelo Mifsud Bonnici

Born in Cospicua on the 9th may 1897. He graduated in law at the Royal University of Malta, where a President of the Comitato Permanente Universitario, was responsible for the organization of the students' strike in May 1919.

In 1922 he joined the Partito Democratico Nazionalista and was co-opted as member of the Legislative Assembly in 1923. In the General Elections of 1924, 1927 and 1932, he was elected to represent the 4th District and served as Minister for Treasury and Police from 1926 to 1927 and from 1932 to 1933.

He was also one of the principal promoters for the fusion between the Unione Politica Nazzjonalista. He later became its general secretary.

On the opposition benches between 1927 and 1930, he was vociferous in favour of Maltese rights.

Following a ruling by the Speaker of the Legislaive Assembly on the powers of the house vis-à-vis the Archbishop, the journalistic criticism of Dr. C. Mifsud Bonnici brought about his committal to Corradino prison for beach of privilege of the Assembly.

He formed part of the nationalist Delegation which 1932 went to London for talks with the British Government. He retreated his ministerial post until November 1933, when the constitution was suspended. Between 1936 and 1939 he was a member of the Executive Council.

Dr. Mifsud Bonnici was director of Patria, Nazzjon and Voce del Popolo a satirical paper of which he was also co-founder. He also founded and edited "Mid-Day Views" and the "Mid-Day News" and "Il-Poplu". In 1938 he became Professor of history of Legislation and in 1940 Professor Criminal Law in the Royal University of Malta.

Dr. Mifsud Bonnici was also an eminent scholar and author. He passed away on the 29th August, 1948.
