Mario Azzopardi

 

Born in Malta in 1950, emigrated to Canada in 1978.

Educated at St Aloysius College and the Royal University of Malta. Directed his first feature film in Malta at the age of 21. "GAGGA" was the first full length feature film in Maltese. For five years after graduating from University Mario was a resident actor/director with the Atturi Theatre Group, a repertory company that was instrumental in reviving theatre in Malta on a national and professional scale, producing an average of nine productions yearly.

In 1977 his play "Sulari Fuq Strada Stretta" was banned from the National theatre in Malta, which resulted in unsuccessful court litigation, causing his emigration.

In Canada he got involved in the then fledgling film industry and soon became one of the leading TV directors there, directing shows for American TV networks.

Among the 120 hrs of TV directed were episodes for Night Heat, The Flash, Viper, In the Heat of the Night, Sliders, Outer Limits, Mantis, Highlander, RoboCop, Secret Service, Counterstrike, ENG, Wiseguy etc etc.

He also directed two feature film, Nowhere to Hide and Divided Loyalties.

Married to Therese Vella from Zabbar, three kids, Lara, Yari, and Kyra.
