Francis Ebejer

Francis Ebejer the first out of a family of seven children, was born in Dingli on the 28th August, 1925. His parents were teachers and from early age he was surrounded with the educational environment. His father was a Head Master and will be remembered for the good he did whilst being a member of L-Ghaqda tal-Maltin.

Francis followed his father's foot steps, and as a teacher he specialized in English. He was a teacher at Siggiewi and Zurrieq Government School. In both localities he was renowned for his discipline and dedication for his work.

His writings were in English as much as they were in Maltese and he started his carrier by means of radio, television plays and short stories booklets some of which were published in New York between the year 1980 - 1992, others were broadcast on B.B.C. whilst others were translated to Italian, Dutch and to Japanese. Having reached to this popularity, Francis Ebejer started writing plays for stage productions, novels a lot of which were published in London and New York.

Francis Ebejer was a member of P.E.N., L-Ghaqda Internazzjonali ta' Awturi, he was a honorary President of Moviment Letterarju Malti and member of the Council of L-Akkademja Tal-Malti.

Ebejer won The Malta Literary Award four times, Ic-Cheyney Award for the best Producer in 1984, The Phoenicia Trophy for Culture between the years of 1982 and 1985 and the prize of Citta di Valletta in 1989. In 1986, he received the medal Medaille d'Honneur de la Ville d'Avignon of France for one of his plays which he translated in French.

Ebejer died all of a sudden in his residence at Swieqi on the 6th June, 1993 and buried in the small picturesque of Dingli. The Village of Dingli was always in his heart and mind which influenced him in his writing.
